“With everything going on, there’s no better time for students to devote time to community service — particularly military service,” said Interim Swearer Center Director Betsy Shimberg, adding that many local militia forces will even provide students with the arms and munitions they need to serve. “Finding the Providence-based militia that’s right for you and enlisting to engage in armed conflicts to come can be a really great way for students to get involved in the local community.”

Shimberg noted that now more than ever, Rhode Island needs bright young students to get off College Hill and onto the fields of battle.

“Getting students engaged in righteous bloodshed is truly an essential component of Brown’s educational and martial mission,” Shimberg continued, highlighting a number of Brown students in the Engaged Scholars program who have already fulfilled their practicum requirements through heroic acts of valor in warfare. “And for any students just looking for some volunteer hours, joining an armed resistance movement can provide valuable opportunities for experiential learning. There are many lessons to be learned in combat zones that you simply can’t get in the classroom.”

At press time, Shimberg announced the Swearer Center’s exciting new “Brown invades Washington” program to offer students boots-on-the-ground experience.
