Utah Elementary School Allows Parents To Opt Children Out Of Receiving Education

“I believe that it is within the civil rights of a family to decide to not have their child learn how to read, write, or do basic mathematics," said principal Micah Hirokawa, emphasizing that parents know best whether or not their children should learn. “We will therefore make our entire curriculum optional.”

“Gaining the fundamental knowledge necessary to navigate the world is not the right path for everyone,” continued Hirokawa. “It should not be the business of a school to make children come to school.”

At press time, the school announced that it would still allow students who declined to receive an education to opt in to recess.
