University Diners Perturbed by Presence of Turkish Bath Patrons in Ratty

Published Friday, October 24th, 2008

The Sharpe Refectory has become more than just a dining hall and social center for Brown students. This semester, it has become a gathering place for hordes of sweaty, scantily clad Middle Eastern men.

These men began to congregate in the Ratty after Dining Services decided to allow the dining hall to be used as a Turkish bathhouse. "Given the state of the economy, we thought it would be smart to take advantage of the Ratty's extremely hot and humid atmosphere in the beginning of the semester. For this reason, all of us at Dining Services have agreed to allow those seeking Turkish baths to gather in the Ratty," said Claire Sidla, Director of Residential Dining.

When they enter the Ratty, bathers pay the same prices as anyone else would pay at a Brown dining hall. For a day pass, the rate is $34, which is reasonable for a bathhouse, especially for one that provides three all-you-can-eat meals. "I came for the steam, but I stayed for the basmati rice, mango chutney, and frozen yogurt. Where else can you get such varied dining options at such low prices?" said Fadil Iftikhar, a regular patron of the bath.

Unfortunately, the presence of the bathers in the Ratty has not been well received by students.

"It's hard enough to stomach the food at the Ratty as it is. Being forced to watch some old, creepy, half-naked guys when I eat doesn't help," said Alex Salt '12. Some students have stopped eating in the Ratty and have taken advantage of alternative dining options.

Lonely Pembrokian Tom Decolo '12 said, "The V-Dub has waffle makers. And good food. And it's not even that far. You all should come visit! ...please."
