At Orientation First-Years Meet Peers From Diverse Backgrounds And Do Not Become Friends With Them

Like many freshmen, David Johnson ’15, a prospective computer science concentrator from suburban Lancaster, PA, said he is excited to learn about different cultures on campus and reaffirm that he wants nothing to do with them.

“I’ll try to find a group of suburban CS kids as quickly as possible and remain in said group until graduation,” he said.

“But I’ll always remember that girl from Egypt I talked to for thirty seconds at Unit Wars,” Johnson added. “That was really cool.”

In a recent poll conducted by the University, international students said they relish the chance to immerse themselves in a lifestyle they are already familiar with. Many students join culture clubs in which they can interact with other people from the same culture.

“Why would I come from Taiwan to America for university if not to only befriend other people who came from Taiwan to America for university?” said Michael Tsou ’15, an international student from Taiwan who, upon matriculating, immediately joined the Taiwanese Culture Club and has not conversed with anyone outside of the club since.

“It’s been unbelievable so far,” said Abigail Pemberton ’15 of Scarsdale, NY. “To be able to almost exactly recreate my group of friends from high school during my first few days at Brown is something I never imagined was possible.”
