Providence resident and mother of two Linda Manning defied a parenting norm yesterday morning when she was simultaneously mad at and disappointed by her son, James, 7. While parents have historically been disappointed in their children without feeling anger, James’s rule-breaking inspired a never-before-seen cocktail of both emotions in his mother. “I don’t know what came over me,” Manning told reporters shortly after the incident. “Not only was I saddened my son had been naughty, I was also furious. Now that I think about it, some disgust might have been mixed in there, too.” Manning continued her streak of groundbreaking parenting moves when she acknowledged that giving James a timeout hurt him more than it hurt her.
