Four months after their breakup, Jill Laettner ’14 is still unabashedly using her ex-boyfriend’s Netflix account to stream hundreds of movies and television shows.
The couple had used Laettner’s computer to access the Netflix “Watch Instantly” service, so when the two split she was still logged in to her ex’s account. “The password was saved in my browser, so as long as I don’t logout and my computer doesn’t die, I can still watch all my favorite shows," said Laettner. "He barely ever used it besides watching stuff with me. Plus, he’s a computer engineer, so he can afford it.”
“I don’t see it as stealing or mooching,” noted Laettner. “Is it stealing if you’re in a breakup and your ex leaves a shirt behind at your place? No. That shirt will probably be a memento of your time together, as well as a super comfy sleeping top. His Netflix account is just like that, but instead of getting a pajama shirt, I have thousands of shows and movies at my disposal for free.”
“Just because we’re no longer dating doesn’t mean I shouldn’t be able to watch ‘House of Cards,’” added Laettner. “My ex may be able to take a piece of my heart, but he can’t take away every single episode of ‘Dexter’ ever.”
