In keeping with the standard journalistic practice of the University newspaper, on Monday the Brown Daily Herald more or less republished a campus-wide email.
Just a few hours after an email from President Christina Paxson arrived in the inboxes of all Brown community members, essentially identical information appeared in an article on the BDH website. “I had to reread the piece to see if I had missed anything, but it turned out to indeed be a rehash of the email I had just read,” said sophomore Vanessa Lam, explaining that the BDH seemed to have hastily paraphrased Paxson’s already-comprehensive message. “Writing this must have been basically a copy-and-paste job.”
“The article had a bit of added context and a few outside quotes thrown in, but it was pretty much the same stuff,” Lam continued, pointing out the overwhelming similarities in content between the 1000-word email and 800-word Herald piece. “I guess this is helpful if you don’t check your email?”
Lam went on to note that the BDH Opinion section mostly contained lengthier versions of Dear Blueno posts.
