BlogDailyHerald, Brown’s most popular online publication, has started simply posting the names of various buildings on campus.
“University Hall,” reads a recent blog post by Karen Dormer ‘16. In the next post, Marc Helstrom ‘17 writes, “The Library.”
“Our number one priority has always been to inform Brown students about campus news in a digestible, 21st-century way,” said Editor-In-Chief Breanne Michaud ’15, a campus map and a WordPress document up on her computer. “Create, condense, circulate. Those are words I know.”
Michaud has overseen some incredible changes during her tenure at BlogDailyHerald. While the online content website used to publish columns on which buildings looked like celebrities, which buildings had food in them, and weekly hand-picked building memes, the decision to revert to just the names of the buildings was a major step forward.
“Breanne is a true new-media revolutionary,” said Blog Publicity Manager Mitchell Kelly, whose decision to share “Barus and Holley” before “The Tall Tower” on Facebook was lauded widely within the campus community. “We’re breaking new ground here. And when the University breaks new ground, we’ll be ready to post the name of the building that goes up. Finger on the pulse."
Most students reacted positively to the change, though some bemoaned the discontinuation of their favorite columns.
“How am I supposed to know which building relates best to the conflict in Ukraine?” asked Henry Bulger ‘18, while Marissa Corden ‘15 wondered if she’d ever find out which building on the Main Green is her spirit animal.
Michaud stood by her decision, saying, “We’re giving millennials the content they need, even if they don’t know that they want it yet.”
In related news, the Brown Daily Herald editorial board decided to just directly re-publish University press releases.
