Bob Marley Brand Iced Coffee Probably Unsanctioned by Bob Marley

Published Wednesday, May 9th, 2012

The face of heroic reggae martyr Bob Marley has recently popped up on the labels of a new brand of Jamaican-themed iced coffee bearing the singer’s name. It remains likely that the use of Marley’s image and name was not sanctioned by the man himself prior to his untimely death 31 years ago.

Marley, known for hits like “I Shot the Sheriff” and “No Woman, No Cry,” and also known for definitely not allowing a company to use his name and reputation to sell pre-packaged iced coffee long after his rebellious life came to an end, is an influential figure in the life of many college students.

“I think about Bob all the time, man,” said Jeremy Silvers ’14. “Bob’s message of nonviolence really speaks to me, and I always see his face when I think about turning the other cheek. I also see his face whenever I go to the Blue Room. Bob’s reassuring eyes have helped me make a lot of tough decisions, like choosing between the ‘Mocha’ and ‘Original’ flavors of Bob Marley Iced Coffee.”

“Mocha is what Bob would have wanted,” Silvers said as he tossed his iced coffee bottle haphazardly onto the Main Green. The bottle hit a reclining student on the toe and provoked a briefly violent skirmish.
