Class Discussion Between Students Who Didn’t Do The Reading Veering Dangerously Close To Orwellian Doublethink

Published Friday, September 22nd, 2023

In a familiar scene from Macmillan Hall this past week, a conversation between the students of ENGL1800H devolved into a menagerie of contradictory statements resembling the lingo used in George Orwell’s 1984.

“I think that Denver is obviously a non-physical entity, despite her human form,” said Macy Collins confidently contradicting her previous point. “I think Morrison’s use of religion is clearly an illusion to Jesus, despite the atheism that is so present in the text.”

“She’s absolutely using metaphor I would argue,” Macy added thoughtfully, unaware that the TA was in fact, picking up on her abject cognitive dissonance. “And I would agree that the lack of metaphor is sort of a metaphor in itself when considering the text in a vacuum.”

“This, of course, is impossible given how important it is to consider the context of the period.” Macy concluded, verging on something unrecognizable from newspeak.

At press time, Collins beginning to believe 2+2=5.
