DeOssie to Face Dean's Hearing after Eating Freshman

Published Friday, December 1st, 2006

"Linebacker Zak DeOssie '07, after eating Sam Harper '10, will attend a Dean's Hearing to determine the punitive measures the University will take in response to the incident.

DeOssie consumed Harper after Brown's 19-13 overtime loss to Dartmouth. The event occurred in front of the Olney Margolis Athletic Center after the team bus returned from Hanover at approximately 9 p.m.

""The kid was walking out of the OMAC when we were unloading the buses. At that point, Zak was already pretty heated after the loss,"" said Linebacker Eric Brewer '08. ""He had something like 14, 15 tackles and we still lost. I think he just needed to take his anger out, so he just ate the kid. It was one swallow, no chewing.""

All-American DeOssie, at 6'4"" and 240 pounds, is one of the fiercest players on the Brown Football team.

""Normally, an occurrence like this wouldn't yield a hearing. Zak is one of the most well-behaved students here at Brown University and has contributed greatly to the community over his four years here. However, this is one of those second time occurrences that just need to get recognized. The hearing is the University's way to tell the community that we don't condone this behavior,"" said Terry Addison, Associate Dean in charge of the non-academic judicial process.

After the Dean's Hearing was announced, DeOssie spoke outside the OMAC: ""I would like to apologize to the Harper Family. From what I have heard, Sam was a great boy. I plan to dedicate my next game to him. Once again, I am sorry.""

The hearing has been scheduled for December 7 and will take place in University Hall. DeOssie will likely be put on non-academic probation. Administrators say that the punishment will have very little to no bearing on the potential professional career of DeOssie, who has been scouted for both his speed in the linebacker position and his long-snapping abilities."
