Sources say the Cahan family of four with a 13-year-old yellow lab dropped by a Providence dog shelter late yesterday morning to harmlessly look around. Brad and Cindy, parents of Andrew, 5, and Brendan, 8, told the owner of the Providence Animal Rescue League that regardless of the fact that they have a really old dog, they simply came to check out the shelter.
Cindy expressed her excitement about visiting the shelter. “We love dogs. Our dog is 13 years old! We came here just because of our strong love of dogs." The family explained that they could not bring their current dog with them to the shelter and followed up with the statement, “We said nothing about our dog having a large cancerous tumor on his cheek, if that’s what you were thinking. Coming here today is solely for the giggles and playtime.”
Dog shelter volunteer Cristy Adams said the mother of two was vehemently writing in a notepad throughout the duration of the shelter visit. “My wife is taking notes today on how some of the shelter dogs interact with the boys,” explained Brad. “Brendan doesn’t like the German Shepherd, so that’s good to know. It’s nice to learn these things about my kids.”
Cindy explained that as a result they thought it was best to spend time with the yellow lab shelter dogs, who were more like their current dog, Colbie.
“It’s really refreshing to play with some dogs that are so… lively,” explained Cindy. “These pups have so much energy!”
At approximately noon, Brad strolled over to one of the yellow labs and exclaimed, “Oh would you look at the that, this yellow lab here looks just like Colbie! What do you think boys?” to which Andrew responded, “Daddy, it’s Colbie!”
The Cahans said they have compiled a list of dogs they liked at the shelter ranking on breed, social interaction with their children, and how well each dog responded when called by the name “Colbie.”
