Mary Collins ‘18 has only been at Brown for a little over two months but has already settled into a steady, supportive group of friends she will soon realize she doesn’t like at all.
“Yeah, we just sort of found each other,” said Collins of the people living in the dorm rooms to the immediate left and right of her own, and of whom she’ll very quickly get tired. “It’s got to be fate that we ended up being so compatible.”
Despite sharing no classes, activities, or major interests with Katrina Murchison ‘18, Adam Leroux ‘18, and Becky Koenig ‘18, three people she will soon be surprised to find herself trying to avoid as she enters her dorm building, Collins has already set up an elaborate group halloween costume that will fall through at the last minute and a language of inside jokes and references that will alienate potential friends that Collins would actually enjoy spending time with.
“I think if I play my cards right, something could happen for Adam and me,” said Collins of the person she’ll drunkenly hook up with once in the spring and then never be able to make eye contact with again, “but right now I’m just glad we can talk about anything.” Leroux’s friendship will be the only one she regrets losing.
“Katrina’s the funny one, and Becky just already knows me so well. We’re going to rent a little cabin on the Outer Banks for spring break,” said Collins of a trip that she will intentionally sabotage after realizing that she can’t stand Murchison’s laugh and finding out that Koenig had gone out without Collins after they had agreed that they were party friends. “I’m so lucky.”
Collins expressed excitement about all the future adventures they will share, though she failed to mention the various idiosyncrasies and arguments that will eventually cause her to dread their Wednesday lunches.
At press time, Collins’ group was talking about how much fun it was going to be to live together next year.
