Grizzled Old U.S. Customs Officer Warns Trouble Lies Yonder

Published Friday, November 2nd, 2012

“Ye’d best just stay away,” said Jennings McCormack, a World War II veteran with a glass eye and permanent scowl, as he gestured past the looming border fence. “There’s trouble brewing across that border. I can feel it in my bones.”

McCormack, an officer in the United States Customs Service, has been policing the U.S. border for over 50 years. “Seen some dark things in my time, but what’s coming, gonna be much worse,” he said.

McCormack is stationed at one of the most trafficked border points in the U.S., if not the world. The border is crossed by millions of people a year, usually commuting to work or buying cheaper gas. “Been catching people trying to smuggle stuff across the border," he added. "Pot, booze, illegal immigrants, you name it. Something’s gonna come to a head. You mark my words.”

McCormack then ominously raised a lantern and pointed toward the woods behind his small cabin. “There’s something out there. Just wait,” he said. After 10 minutes of staring silently into the forest, McCormack sullenly went back indoors.

“Nothing’s happened yet, but it will. There’s a bad smell in the air, and it ain’t fish. I’m countin’ the days, and just warning people to turn back before it’s too late.”

As of press time, there was a cold wind a blowin’, causing the entire U.S. Customs Service to shudder in unison.
