If You Like The Open Curriculum So Much Why Don't You Marry It? By Dean of Admission Logan Powell

Published Friday, October 25th, 2019

As the Dean of Admission here at Brown University, it is my distinct pleasure each year to be able to get to know the incoming first-years through their applications. There is nothing more fascinating than being able to see how the groups of students change each year. However, after reading the applications we’ve received so far this year I feel obligated to offer a little piece of advice this year’s applicants: if you love the open curriculum so much, why don’t you freaking marry it!

I know that we encourage applicants to talk about what makes Brown special to them in their applications, and I know that the open curriculum is pretty cool, but it’s like all you guys talk about. You'd almost think everyone had a big, fat crush on it. And you know what people do to things that they have a big, fat crush on? THEY MARRY THEM. Seriously, why don’t you marry it already.

I bet you stay up at night dreaming about your wedding to the open curriculum. Who’s gonna be the maid of honor, your hatred of distribution requirements? If you ever saw the open curriculum in real life, you'd probably be sooooo nervous you wouldn't even be able to talk. And you'd probably be tired from staying up all night writing "ME + OPEN CURRICULUM" covered in hearts over and over in your diary.

You and the open curriculum, sitting in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G!
