POINT: Racism is Bad by Anthony Williams
Historically, racial minorities have endured horribly unjust discrimination, both directly though the legal system and through more unspoken social practices. While it’s true that much of this de jure racism has been eradicated since the civil rights movement of the ‘60s, much of the de facto racism is still present. Also a continuing issue is the different treatment ethnic minorities have to deal with on a day-to-day personal basis in social interactions. This is unacceptable.
Judging a person by their skin color is reducing them to a stereotype. With the blending of cultures resulting from technology’s increasing presence in our society, it’s increasingly egregious to be using these outdated modes of thinking.
To be short, racism is bad.
COUNTERPOINT: Come On, You Guys, Don’t Make Me Write This by Simon Henriques
Seriously? I have to write this? You’ve got to be kidding me. How am I supposed to defend racism? This is not what I signed up for when I joined the staff. I mean, I’m all for exploring diverse viewpoints or whatever, but “racism is good?” No. I just can’t.
It’s not like I ever even make racist jokes! That’s Ian’s thing. He should be the one writing this, if anyone. Remember last week when he said that thing about Italians? I’m not even going to repeat it here. It was awful.
This is going to come up when people google my name. The job market is already bad enough! I don’t need potential employers thinking I love racism. I don’t.
Come on. I’ll do anything. The article about how Harvard is better than Brown? The “Professors, Please Give Me An F In Every Class” op-ed? I’ll write them all. Just not this.
I guess this is what I get for writing for a bunch of lousy Paraguayans.
