Students in the Diman House dormitory were awakened Sunday night by a shrill and untimely fire alarm as their residence hall erupted in flames. The alarm, which sounded at midnight, forced students out of their beds without any time to gather their belongings or even get dressed in many cases. “They’re just so annoying,” said Lucas Pollin ’14. “I was with this girl and all of a sudden the alarm goes off and I’m just like, come on!” he said outside the ash heap that once was Diman House.
Once the alarm stopped ringing, students hoped to go back to their normal routines and put the rude awakening behind them. Many, however, found that the alarm had caused irreparable damage. “I’ve heard fire alarms before but none like this,” said Tommy Gertz ’14. “It literally destroyed all my things. The soundwaves destroyed everything I own. Also, my roommate is now dead.”
Many students expected to at least receive the conciliatory candy that usually accompanies fire-alarms, but this time was different. “I walked outside, hoping to snag a tootsie roll or something, but the candy guys weren’t there,” said Pollin. “Instead of candy, I just got sprayed in the face by a masked man holding a hose and I’m just like, come on!”
Amidst the confusion outside, many students discussed what they were doing when they heard the alarm go off. “My friends and I were just enjoying a normal night playing Xbox and enjoying our new flamethrower when, all of a sudden, we just heard this awful noise,” said Gertz. “Now my Xbox is destroyed, and my flamethrower is all sooty.”
Many discussed what they will miss the most in the aftermath of the alarm. “People said I had the best-smelling room at Brown,” said Danielle Frost ‘13. “I had the entire Yankee Candle ‘Winter Lodge’ collection. It was incredible. Now my room smells like burnt hair. I guess I need to buy some more candles.”
