Last Thursday, one of Rhode Island School of Design’s most subversive fashion students took everyone by storm wearing the Ivy League Athletics “8 Against Hate” shirt.
“Being a fashion student here at RISD means competing for the weirdest, most derivative style every day,” said apparel design major Jake Tumlin, dressed identically to every Brown athlete. “I always want to make a statement with the way I look, but last week I saw three separate people wearing chain mail made of uncooked macaroni. It’s hard to stand out anymore, you know? But this shirt? Blatantly advertising being an Ivy League student athlete? Unexpected. Campy. The rest of the apparel design students are gonna shit their thrifted, patchwork pants over how unforeseen this choice was.”
“Apparel design is about using clothing to express your identity and message to the world,” Tumlin continued, fashionably scootering into a flock of athlete clones wearing the same shirt. “The ‘8 Against Hate’ message of diversity makes me stand out as a guy who isn’t afraid to challenge expectations and go against the grain.”
When questioned about the rest of their outfit, Tumlin explained they had paired the 8 Against Hate shirt with airpods, black Adidas sweatpants tucked into long white Nike socks, and ironically pink crocs with even more ironic jibbitz.
