While walking over to their cars to leave work, work colleagues Mateo and Lara, entranced by a sunset, decided to enjoy the phenomenon together.
“Obviously, this wasn’t planned. I don’t even know Mateo that well, I would never think of inviting him to watch the sunset. We just closed up our shifts together and saw the sky turn such a beautiful color we just had to stand and watch it,” stated Lara, who never even spoke to Mateo in a one-on-one conversation. “The type of thing that makes you realize you are human. The type of thing that makes you believe in God."
“For most of it, we just watched in comfortable silence. But it got us talking about our past memories, like how right after my father died, I stayed up all night crying with my mom, and then the sky erupted like this,” said Mateo, who believes Lara and her friend Amanda are the same person. “Laurel told me that one time, she overdosed and really believed it was over for her. But, she saw the sunlight radiating from her window carving shapes all on her wall that were so beautiful she crawled her way to her phone to call for help and save her life. After she told me that, we just watched a little longer until the sky became completely black.”
At press time, Mateo and Lara remained acquaintances.
