Super Old Man Bagging Groceries Bums Everyone Out

Published Friday, September 6th, 2013

A super old man bagging groceries at a local Stop & Shop has been described by customers and employees alike as a major bummer.

Sources were unable to confirm the exact age of the man, who is identified only as Roland by his nametag. Customers speculated that the man was probably way too old to be doing manual labor, citing his slack mouth, and papery skin, and hunched stature. Stop & Shop customer Karen Lasota estimated that Roland is “at least 85, I mean Jesus. He shouldn’t have to be doing this.”

Grocery shoppers at Roland’s register were seen looking on hopelessly as the man struggled to ring up their items with his arthritic hands.

“That guy’s hands are so shaky,” recalls customer Mike Vasquez, “and then he had to get help to work the register. I’d been having a good day till I went shopping. My plan was to fix a nice dinner for my girlfriend. Now that I’ve seen this old guy struggling to just pick up a can of peas, I dunno. It just breaks your heart.”

Shopper Denise Gunderson seconds Vasquez’s concern for Roland. “He was ringing me up and it was clear that he was struggling to see the buttons,” she said. “I’m a proud American but this kind of thing makes me want to curl up on my couch and cry. Are things so bad that we can’t support our elderly? It’s like, at least make him a greeter."

Marjorie Timmons, 63, claims to be the second-oldest cashier at the Stop & Shop. “Sometimes I look over at Roland and wonder how far south things would have to go for me to still be working 20 years from now," she said. "Is that what I have to look forward to? What an undignified life. What a bummer.”
