There’s No “I” In Team, But There Is A “T” by Terry "T" McCunningham, Heisman Trophy Winner and Three Time National Champion

Published Friday, October 27th, 2023

You know what they say—teamwork makes the dream work. Together we stand, divided we fall. Many hands make light work. Those all may be true. But let’s get it straight—while there is no “I” in Team, there is a “T.”

Let’s be clear—I love my team. My teammates are my biggest fans, my support network, and some of my best friends. And I need my team to win. But more importantly, my team needs me to win. Where would the team be without Big “T”? Three National Championships less, that’s for sure. I carried their asses all the way through, not once, not twice, but THREE separate times! Without me, we wouldn’t have even made the playoffs.

Am I saying that teamwork isn’t important? Far from it. A team needs to work together to make big plays and win big games. But how far can a team make it without their star? Specifically when that star is me, Terry “T” McCunningham? Not far, man. Not far. When I was out in the ’21 season with a torn Achilles, we lost in the first round. The next year when I was back in action? National Champs, baby!

Don’t get me wrong—a football game is a team effort. That is, you will literally be disqualified from a football game if you don’t have 11 men on the field. But you know why they only give the Heisman to one player and not the whole team? I’ll give you a hint—it has to do with a certain quarterback who averaged two passing touchdowns and three rushing touchdowns a game last season. I’m the MVP, man… or should I say, the MVT.

I love this game, man, the beautiful game of football. I love waking up every morning and getting to practice and tossing the football around with my boys. And I love the big plays under the bright stadium lights when the crowd goes wild. But what I love most of all is that everyone on the team knows their role. Some guys are fast. Some guys are great tacklers. And one guy just knows that they need to put the whole team on their back so we can get that dub. That guy is me: Terry “T” McCunningham.
