Cuban Revolution Quelled, Replaced by Denny's

Published Tuesday, February 6th, 2007

The scene at 50 Aborn Street was one of relief when, last week, Denny's officially opened its doors. The Denny's, a family chain restaurant that offers such treats as the Meat Lover's Omelet, had finally subdued the location's now-former restaurant, Cuban Revolution, after attempts to maintain its grip over location.

Cuban Revolution had served customers at its Providence locale since the day it opened, January 1, 1959. Customers say that the restaurant served sandwiches with the people always in mind.

Denny's manager felt differently about Cuban Revolution.

"It is a momentous occasion that we have finally been able to get rid of that wretched restaurant owned by those crazies," said Denny's manager Fred Benson. "I thank God every day that we could open a Denny's here. We're lucky. It only happened because their lying manager wanted to retire. He says he wants a vacation. I think he's dying."

Cuban Revolution's owner turned down an interview and requested that he remain anonymous, stating that he wishes to vacation in peace and privacy.
When asked about the removal of Cuban Revolution and the installation of Denny's, locals had mixed responses.

"This is the end of an era. They ran a great restaurant here with all their cuban flair," said Amy Richards '08, a frequent customer of Cuban Revolution. "I ate there all the time. It had its ugly moments. On occasion you'd find a cockroach, a little mold, maybe an ear. But I still supported them with my business."

"I've been waiting for that place to get bumped out for 42 years," said local retired taxi driver Marvin Jenkins. "I was there when it opened. It was ugly. The whole thing was filled with bloodshed… metaphorical bloodshed that is. There was dispute after dispute about zoning, health codes, and permits. A lot of men were lost… fired that is. The owners of Cuban Revolution went through numerous sets of lawyers. It was bad, and now it's over."
