The Brown administration recently released a statement about why they cannot make a statement about making a statement.
“There are many factors at play here, which means we cannot make a statement about making a statement at this time,” a written statement from administration to the Brown community read. “Brown University is a place of learning and growth, which means we are unable to state anything about stating anything for the time being and probably into the future. Here at Brown, community members hold many different perspectives; these perspectives are all certainly perspectives, and therefore we do not think it appropriate to make a statement about making any kind of statement right now.”
“It is a difficult time for our community, and we as the leaders of this institution have decided it best that we not release a statement about releasing a statement just yet,” the email statement continued. “In light of recent events, we as the administration have considered the pros and cons of making a statement, but we just don’t feel it right to use our institutional power to put out a statement about making a statement.”
“We hope students and faculty know that we are here to support them—this, of course, does not mean we will release any sort of statement or have any sort of opinion or really take any position on any matter for the foreseeable future,” admin wrote in their statement. “Instead, we will continue to support students by being a wordless, actionless body that provides little support; we feel this is the best way to emphasize that we will refrain from making a statement about making a statement.”
At press time, administration sent a follow-up email explaining that they will not further explain their explanations.
