Cancer Survivor Inspires Others To Have Large Savings, Good Support Network

Published Friday, December 5th, 2014

Breast cancer survivor Tara Garber has reportedly inspired hundreds of people with her story of beating breast cancer with expensive medical treatments and the loving support of her friends and family.

“Tara’s journey really touched me,” said Melanie Tuttle, who learned about Garber’s struggle through a piece Garber’s sister wrote in the local newspaper. “It just goes to show that a person, given the right economic and social advantages, can overcome terrible hardship.”

“The diagnosis was very serious, but she still had hope and enough money to pay for an experimental treatment,” said Tuttle. “There’s a lesson in that.”

Garber’s friend and coworker Jake Navarro was also touched by Garber’s strength and situational advantage. “I value what I have so much more now, because if I get cancer I’m going to need it.”

Garber, who is in remission as of last month, says she feels fortunate to have beat cancer with the help of a team of doctors and loved ones to support her. “When I got the diagnosis, I was so scared,” said Garber. “But I knew I was going to fight this thing, because I have a decent amount of savings and I live in a supportive community that will help me get the best care possible.”

“Now that I’ve beat cancer, I know anything’s possible if you’re in a privileged situation,” Garber added.

Garber told reporters that she hopes her story inspires others who are struggling, but who are otherwise advantaged in every possible way.
