Cool Urban Coffee Shop Decorated with 80 Pounds of Trash Glued to Walls

Published Friday, September 6th, 2013

Citing a variety of scrap metal, broken bicycle parts, and rotting pieces of wood adorning the walls of local coffee shop The Hub, sources confirmed that the popular cafe seems to be decorated solely with trash glued to its walls.

Manager Tim Portwood confirmed The Hub’s “casual, urban feel” was achieved by repurposing about 80 lbs. of trash as wall art. “We want this to be a place where artists and writers feel inspired and comfortable, and we thought about that a lot when we designed the space,” Portwood told reporters. “So yeah, we put garbage on the walls.”

Coffee shop clientele, who visited the business for espresso drinks and an eclectic mix of music, reported that The Hub’s decorations included a used toothbrush, several dozen smashed beer cans and a collection of gum wrappers, all apparently secured to the wall using Super Glue. “I really like the vibe here,” said patron Caitlin Mallery. “It’s super casual and industrial.” Most café visitors were supportive of The Hub’s interior design, citing the recycled elements and “junk yard feel” as a draw.

The Hub’s wall adornments have resulted in a rodent infestation, which frequent customer Timothy Ring cited as creating a “natural environment” and a “really specific musk” that makes The Hub a perfect place to sit down and work. “I also like how their Wi-Fi password is a really long series of letters and numbers that you have to buy $18 worth of coffee to borrow and that their bathroom key is a can of soup from 1987,” Ring added. “It’s a super unique place.”

At press time, Portwood was nailing a raccoon carcass to the wall above the pastry display.
