Signing off on an email to his professor, junior Brandon Roth reported that the message was composed entirely of exclamation points. “I threw in an exclamation point to make it seem laid-back,” Roth recalled as he considered sending the email. “But it was still so dry. So I went back and took out everything that wasn’t an exclamation point, and after that I peppered in a few more exclamation points so I could be extra-sure I wasn’t sounding mean. Then I ran it by some friends who suggested adding a couple more exclamation points.” At press time, Roth was devastated to learn that he’d forgotten to delete “Sent from my iPhone.”
