Student Just Wants a Summer Job Where an Old Man Calls Him Champ

Published Friday, May 3rd, 2013

Though Jason Pendleton ’14 has been looking for summer internships and jobs for the past several months, he has been unable to find exactly what he is looking for. “I’ve been really disappointed by the lack of opportunities I’ve found,” said Pendleton. “Opportunities to be called ‘champ’ by an old guy, I mean.”

Pendleton, who is primarily looking for work that will allow him to be patted on the back and taken under the wing of a seasoned veteran, has been disappointed in what he’s found so far. “What I want is pretty simple,” said Pendleton, who has been unable to find jobs that fit his criteria on CareerLAB’s job board and other online listings. “I want to get a job where a balding guy with osteoporosis takes me out to lunch and tells be about getting started in the business and makes inappropriate jokes about my girlfriend.” Pendleton added, “It’s okay because he’s old.”

Though Pendleton, an economics concentrator, has received job offers from investment banking and consulting firms, he says he still doesn’t know what he’ll be doing this summer. “For me, it’s not just about another line on my resume,” said Pendleton. “It’s about having a valuable work experience and really connecting with a venerable man in his seventies who is a little tough on me but only because he knows I can do better.”

“I’m going to be spending 40 hours a week at this job. It needs to have a work environment that I actually like,” said Pendleton, who hopes to spend the summer growing closer and closer to an elderly man until that man dies, leaving him with the pain of his absence, but also the strength of his wisdom.

Though the job hunt has been frustrating, Pendleton says he has found one opportunity he’s excited about. “There’s a position as a down and out wrestler that looks really great,” said Pendleton. “It’s unpaid, but you make it work to do what you love.”
