Banding together to make their discomfort with their new neighbors clear, the entire town of Chester, Connecticut pitched in on Wednesday to make the Clermonts, a black family that recently moved to town, feel on edge. “When they moved in, we all made sure to make them feel really nervous by staring at them for too long while they unpacked their truck,” said Chester resident Dana Hillman, who personally went to the Clermonts’ house to introduce herself and let slip that she already knew where they were from and how much they paid for their new home. “The whole neighborhood really came together to welcome the Clermonts with awkward silences and stares. I guess it’s just a small town thing.” At press time, several Chester residents were driving very slowly by the Clermonts’ house.
