Samantha Selmeyer, a junior at Brown who has gotten really into crocheting, has gifted yet another of her friends a 90-minute creation made of tattered yarn.
“I think it’s a great way to give my friends a personalized gift made with love,” said Selmeyer, who starts thinking about most of her friend’s birthdays on the day they occur. Her most recent project, a slab of yarn that vaguely resembled a heart, was for a close friend she’s known for nearly three years. “She’ll be thrilled with this one,” said Selmeyer, who doesn’t seem to actually know her friend at all. “Just thrilled!”
“For three years straight, all I’ve been gifted from Samantha are tiny crochet projects,” said Ryan Burger, who thinks of Samantha as a genuine friend. "None of the gifts have been personalized or looked like they cost more than $5 in combined material and labor costs. She’s also prone to doing repeats, apparently; I’m pretty sure my mutual friend and I got the same exact leaf garland one year.”
“I think she only knew it was my birthday because Snapchat notified her about it,” continued Burger, who was increasingly doubtful of how genuine their friendship was. “Come to think of it, we haven’t spoken to each other once outside of school. But I have a leaf garland from her.”
At press time, Selmeyer had received yet another mug from her friend that does pottery.
