BCA Announces Official 2011 Spring Weekend Rumors

Published Friday, February 25th, 2011

The Brown Concert Agency released this morning a list of the official rumored bands for the 2011 Spring Weekend Concert Series, including such artists as viral power pop group OK Go, indie electropop quintet Hot Chip, breakout alternative rapper Kid Cudi and respected anti-folk rock star Beck.

"We really feel as though we've put forth the best set of rumored artists to date, and I couldn't be more excited about this year's Spring Weekend gossip," said BCA spokesperson Scott Helmuth '12 in his statement this morning. "We think people are going to look back and say, 'Wow. I was there when Beck was rumored to play at Spring Weekend.' That's big. That's something you can tell your grandkids about."

Helmuth also noted that Kid Cudi and OK Go were ranked at the top of a BCA poll conducted in the fall asking students which artists they would most want to get their hopes up about possibly seeing at Spring Weekend 2011.

"One of the challenges we faced was topping the rumors about last year's Spring Weekend," commented BCA Booking Chair Leona Guilford '11. Last year's rumored artists, including Jay-Z, Elvis Costello and the Beastie Boys, were widely heralded as the University's best group of prospective artists ever. "The campus was ablaze with chatter for weeks; it was incredible," recalled Guilford. "Still, I'm confident that this year's grapevine will be even juicier."

However, many students are openly disappointed by what they feel are lackluster rumors.

"Ugh, this year's Spring Weekend speculation is gonna totally suck," began a disgruntled Peter Aulenta '13. "They have an entire year to come up with some decent rumored artists and they give us Hot Chip? If that's the best they can do, I probably won't even go…"

After clearing his throat, he continued, "post incendiary comments about it on the Blog Daily Herald message boards."

Some students who are unhappy with the current lineup of conjectured artists have taken to Facebook to draw attention to some lesser known bands that they feel would provide spicy and interesting Ratty cereal bar scuttlebutt. One such group, titled "Bring the Possibility of Ratatat Coming to Brown to Brown!" has over five hundred members.

"Just imagine how cool it would be to talk about how cool it would be for Ratatat to play here!" explained group founder Paul Ying '12. "Simply put, Ratatat is an electrifying, breakout band that people are really excited to talk about seeing."

Ratatat is but one of numerous bands that were rumored to be officially rumored to appear at Spring Weekend 2011. Other such artists included A Tribe Called Quest, Kanye West and Daft Punk.

"Sure, we would love to endorse some of those rumors," remarked BCA Agency Chair Martin Olivar '12. "But at the end of the day, someone like Kanye West is simply too expensive of an artist for it to be reasonable to believe an unverified report that we are considering booking him for Spring Weekend. To be honest, we've actually spoken to his agent and we might book him for the concert, but as a rumor it has no legs."

Olivar also explained that Daft Punk actually was scheduled to be rumored to appear at Brown's 2011 Spring Weekend. However, the electro house synth duo was pulled from the list of rumored artists last minute when they were booked to be rumored to appear at Princeton's Spring Weekend instead, which is the same weekend as Brown's Spring Weekend Concert.

"I wish I could be at a conversation about Spring Weekend at Princeton right now," said Terry Sheam '12. "I mean, I guess Beck is pretty decent gossip, but he's rumored to play Spring Weekend every year. And come on, OK Go? At least give me a rumor of a band that will actually make me upset when it's proven to be totally false and unfounded."
