Student Keeps Referring to Dance Partner as "Opponent"

Published Friday, December 4th, 2009

Andrew Glover '12 has won his last eight dance battles, the sophomore breathlessly announced to a crowd of five on Wriston quad Saturday night.

Glover said his victories were decisive as he forced his opponents' resignation in all eight grinding contests.

"I just went out there and did my thing," said Glover. "I probably challenged about 30 girls to dance throughout the night, but very few dare to take me on at this point. My reputation precedes me-they know they don't stand a chance."

Monica Wiehler '13 said Glover's fighting style was intimidating.

"It was pretty weird when he leaned in really close, harshly whispered 'game time' in my ear, and then intensely stared me down as we danced awkwardly to Miley Cyrus."

Glover recalled the fight as one of his best.

"Yeah, I put the moves on her for sure," he said. "I pinned her against my crotch and just thrusted for a while. Then a seamless transition to a devastating boob lock. Classic. By the time we started dueling with our mouths, she was pretty much finished; I barely needed to bite her face at all before she backed down."

Most of Saturday's fraternity-hosted dance tournaments were well-worth the three or four dollar entry fee, Glover said. By efficiently eliminating all of his partners from the field, he managed to advance past the round of 16 three times in one night, a remarkable accomplishment.

When asked if he pregamed for the party, Glover responded that if that meant spending 15 minutes stretching and another 20 minutes 'sparring' with his roommate, then yes, he pregamed.

"You have to be prepared in every way if you want to win. A lot of it is mental, just willing your opponent to give up and go dance with an inferior player. I love martial arts."

Glover is a member of the Brown Ballroom Dance third-string team, a tier which was created exclusively for players of his caliber, and of which Glover is the only member. Captain Natalie Tinnant discussed his development as a dancer.

"[Glover's] main strategy is to spin his partner around as fast as he can for a while, hurl her into a wall, then repeat if he deems it necessary. It's.unique. We tend to avoid him now, which usually means he shows up at practice, finds no willing partners, loudly pronounces himself the champion, and goes home."

Glover also claims to be a successful break dancer, a fighting form that he appreciates for its relative lack of restrictions. He says his nickname, "The Punisher," is one of the most feared on the northeast circuit.

"A typical break dancing partner might try one of those spin-around-on-the-floor moves against me," Glover explained, "but I typically find that a good solid kick to the gut is enough to win most contests."

Glover says that by walking onto the dance floor, we implicitly accept a certain amount of danger. To him, the phrase 'safety dance' is an oxymoron on par with 'touch football' and 'ice-cream social.' He considers his two arrests for assault and battery to be not only a reflection of the law's unfortunate ignorance of the unwritten rules of dance but also a testament to his unparalleled dancing ability.
